Yoga

If you are looking for a way to relieve tension, consider yoga. It has been around since well over two thousand years ago, and the ancient practice of yoga teaches self-discipline, as well as mental and physical well-being. It is a way of life that has definitely withstood the test of time.

Yoga means union. It originated in India, and is meant to be a method of joining the individual self with the divine. It uses both mental and physical exercises to achieve this goal.

Yoga postures are called asanas and they are designed to tone, strengthen or align the body. Practicing these postures makes the spine supple and healthy. Flexibility improves; muscles are lengthened and stretched. It also helps problems with balance.

Chronic pain can be relieved by yoga. Breathing deeply into muscles may alter the perception of pain. Stretching and toning help relieve tense muscles, while at the same time build endurance and stamina. As you become more adept at yoga practice, the tension will leave you and be replaced by higher levels of energy.

Daily practice is said to lead to emotional well-being, mental clarity and joy of living. Part of this is because the practice of breathing deeply allows oxygen to flow through your cells. As the blood flows through the brain cells, mental clarity ensues. Without deliberate practice of deep breathing, we tend to breathe in a shallow way, which increases tension. Deep breathing leads to deep relaxation. Deep relaxation leads to deep sleep.

The practice of yoga requires that you focus on your breathing, Learning to focus on your breathing can help teach you to focus on just one thing at a time and let go of distractions.

Challenging your body to go as far as it can lets you know that you can move past other limitations in your life. You will be surprised how far you can go.

There are many ways to learn yoga. If you are very serious, you can study under a master, called a yogi. There may be classes at your local YMCA. Purchasing a DVD for home use allows you to practice yoga at your convenience, with very little expense. However, working directly with a teacher will allow you to be corrected if you are not doing the poses exactly right.

When you begin the practice of yoga, be gentle with yourself. Listen to your body and don’t push it too far. There are no deadlines. The goal is to develop a new healthy lifestyle, not to win a race. This is a goal worth waiting for.
